The intelligent Terminal Box Concept

The idea is simple – yet clever

Assembly conveyor systems always consist of various functional areas in which either the transport of the pallet is controlled (for example by diverters, junctions, back-up cut-offs) or the pallet carries out a specific task at a stopping point (for example, at lift-locate units or lift-rotate stations). A functional area therefore includes mechanical components such as stoppers, diverters, lift-locate units, valves, and sensors are necessary for the function. An Intelligent Terminal Box (ITB) incorporates the valves and the connectors of the sensors together in a standardized box. This Intelligent terminal box monitors and controls all functions of the area. All actuators can also be operated individually by manual control.

In addition there is communication with other ITBs other functional areas, and with the higher ranking system controls.  For the user this means that all functions serving solely to transport the pallets are handled completely by the ITBs. This considerably reduces the design work, documentation, entrances, and exits, as well as programming. The same applies to the commissioning phase, to later maintenance, or alterations.

Possible functional areas

  • Junction: The pallet turns into a main route, observing right of way regulations
  • Diverter: Pallets are separated, driving straight on or turning off
  • Back-up cut-off: In the event of a back-up the pallet does not travel past a defi ned point
  • Lift-locate unit: Pallet is selected and then positioned exactly
  • Lift-rotate unit: Pallet is selected then turned
  • Transfer: Pallet is selected and then taken onto a parallel cross track
  • Turning module: Pallet is selected and then taken onto another track via a rotating track segment
  • Lift: Pallet is selected and then taken onto another transport tier via a lifting carriage

The advantages

  • Finished units with integrated pneu-matics, sensors, manual function, and intelligence for function areas of assembly conveyors
  • Quick and simple planning of complete system controls
  • Quick and precise calculation
  • Finished documentation for the pneu-matics and electrical drawings
  • Drastic reduction of planning work and the connections to the central CPU
  • No programming, as software already completely installed
  • Easy commissioning due to integrated manual functions
  • Simple, quick replacement of the complete ITB box if faulty
